erm..this is more afairy-tale like story but i loved it.
Denizen of the deep by E.H.Smith.
maybe it's a bit onthe outer-skirts of criteria but it's inthe field of somethign granting someone three wishes and the perosn learns some wise lessons from it.
I believe on the sugar quill there was someone else who posted a version of what happened when Deniis creevey fell into the lake.

Hi, here from the Daily Snitch.

I'm working on one set in the midieval ages that takes Grimms' The Twelve Dancing Princesses very seriously but allows for the exaggeration of rumour and time. One of the characters is an ancestor of the Malfoys and another is an ancestor of the Weasleys. It traces the origins of the Malfoy-Weasly feud, examines magic before wands were widely available, Wizarding-Muggle relations, and why Molly is so very understanding when Ginny wears out her shoes before she grows out of them.

Sorry I'm only now getting back to you on this one, lj has been giving me 'comment' emails these last two days for things I posted that were replied to weeks ago, and this was one of them.

I kinda abandoned that fic in favor of other things, but I might finish it sometime. I'll keep your comment email so I can find this thread for if/when I finish it. I've been writing a lot lately, so I actually might.

First off, this list is amazing- I can't wait to read through these!

Secondly, I wrote a fairytale-esque story for the [info]sshg_exchange, which draws from lots of European story traditions. The climax is pure Sleeping Beauty, so I hope it's fairy tale enough to make your list.
